San Fran Ban on Circumcision?

Published on December 2, 2010 by   ·   1 Comment

San Francisco is pushing to have a ban placed on circumcision, and may be able to have the initiative placed on the November 2011 ballot. Many are in an outrage over the idea. Lloyd Schofield, a retired hotel credit manager, is fighting for the initiative and needs 7,100 signatures to have it placed on the ballot. Schofield says that it is needed to protect children from what he claims is “forced genital cutting.” If the initiative makes it to the ballot and passes, it would “make it a misdemeanor to circumcise, excise, cut or mutilate the foreskin, testicle or penis of another person under the age of 18,” violations would end in a $1,000 fine.

The initiative has angered many Bay Area Jews, along with other Non-Jew citizens. It is considered by many to be a direct violation of their First Amendment right to freedom of Religion, and the expression thereof. Physicians are speaking out against the measure as well, stating that circumcision greatly reduces the risk of AIDS and STDs later in life, and is less “traumatic” when performed as an infant rather than after the age of 18. There is support for Schofield and his initiative though, and some would like to see it taken further than San Francisco.

If it will make it to the ballot remains to be seen. Remember though, that this is the same city that banned Happy Meal toys. If this passes, how long before even more of our rights are stripped away?

I was surprised when I had heard about this in the news.(my first argument about my son the day he was born was over me deciding to circumcise him)I did it. His dad left. I just wanted him to have a pretty penis. From a medical perspective it does have benefits. I know someone who was diabetic that had to have it done in his 70s. But, there are others that view being “uncircumcised” their religious right. I prefer them aesthetically pleasing, but who am I?
