The Day Of Silence

The day of silence is a national event organized by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network. It is celebrated to bring awarness to the issue of LGBT bullying and harassment.
April 16, 2010 was the 15th annual Day Of Silence. On this day, I participated in this event. The following is my experience:
Once I stepped foot on the Morrilton High School campus, my first day of silence began. I then realized how hard it is to stay silent and not want to tell others your thoughts. I was told “Oh you’re doing the stupid day of silence thing aren’t you.” No matter how hard I wanted to tell that person off, I stayed silent because I knew I was doing this for my personal views not theirs. I broke my silence to do a speech on how the LGBT community deserves the same rights of marriage, adoption, and public acceptance. Really, who is our government to say that just because a couple is in love and they are of the same sex that they can’t be accepted legally as a married couple? After dealing with my struggles of not saying how I felt about things that day, I realized how hard it is for the LGBT community to keep their feelings silent.
