ARIZONA IMMIGRATION LAW

Arizona Governor, Jan Brewer, signed an immigration bill into law in April of 2010. This law is being touted as one of the toughest in the United States. The law requires immigrants to carry their registration papers at all times, and also requires police to question anyone if there’s reason to suspect their presence is illegal. The law also expands to include those who hire illegal immigrants and those who transport them into the country.
Michael Hethmon, general counsel for the Immigration Reform Law Institute, has said that he has been approached by four other states that are interested in signing a similar law into place. He declined to name the four states.
Arizona’s immigration law has brought on several protests and petitions. People are outraged claiming their constitutional rights are being violated. No evidence of these claims has been found. Still others are strong supporters of the new law, being of the opinion that it’s about time the government does something to protect its citizens. There is hope that this law will lower unemployment rates for the state by opening up jobs that were previously held by illegal immigrants. Only time will tell if the law helps or hurts, but it can be assumed that if it helps we will be seeing more states enacting similar immigration laws.
