Obama will send National Guard to secure Southwest Borders

The President will send up to 1,200 Guard Troops and ask for more finances for the Police to help fight drug trafficking following a increase in bi-partisan pressure to do so. The soldiers will spend a year deployed in four border states assisting in monitoring of traffic between border crossings in order to try and intercept illegal drug shipments.
Representative Gabrielle Giffords said “Arizonans know that more boots on the ground means a safer and more secure border. Washington heard our message.”
George W. Bush sent nearly 6,000 Guard troops between 2006 and 2008 to build roads and fences and assist Law Enforcement Officers, which helped to secure over a 160,000 illegals immigration arrests and the confiscation of 300,000 + pounds of illegal drugs.
I guess we will have to wait and see if this move has any real bearing on the issues that we have been experiencing in these areas. Or if it just political lip service to get the monkeys off the President’s back. Time will tell!

It is hard to say what impact this will have, you are right. I’m glad he’s done SOMETHING, but who knows if it is too little too late or not too late but not enough… if that makes any sense. I am cautiously optimistic that this will at least make some of the people in the border states safer.
