Aokigahara Forest, also called the Sea of Trees, is located at the base of Mt. Fuji in Japan. It is also loosely referred to as “suicide forest”. This is due to it being the second most popular place for people to commit suicide (the first is the Golden Gate Bridge). It has made several different lists as one of the creepiest places on earth. Since the 50s, businessman and others have wandered into the forest to never wander back out. Even earlier than the 50s, farmers sent their elderly and sick children there to die. Happening upon nooses and hanging or rotting bodies is a common occurrence in the forest.
After large protests from locals the government has placed signs in the forest urging those who feel suicidal to seek counseling, and security cameras at the entrance to the forest. The government also does an annual sweep of the forest to retrieve the bodies. Many claim it is too little too late. Just another example of governments making a show of help, but not really doing anything to “fix” the problem. Whatever the situation, “suicide forest” seems like a pretty good place to hunt some “ghosts”
Japanese spiritualists believe the vast number of suicides committed there have generated paranormal activity and prevents many from being able to escape the depths of the forest. Escape is further complicated by compasses being made worthless due to rich deposits of magnetic iron in the soil. Locals have three categories for forest visitors: hikers just enjoying the beauty, those just seeking a glimpse of death and decay, and those who wish to not leave at all (suicidal persons). It is said the forest is inhabited by Yurei, Japanese spirits of the dead that cling to earth. Many have reported catching a glimpse of these Yurei. Many visitors say this adds to the oppressive feeling that the forest does not want anyone to leave.
