immigration 300x210 Federal Government Sues Arizona over Immigration Law

On Tuesday July 6, 2010, the Obama administration sued Arizona over their new immigration law. The lawsuit is intended to give the federal government control over the issue. This move has angered Republicans who insist the border requires more security.

The administrations argument is that the state law is unconstitutional and would deplete law enforcement resources. Arizona legislature, who passed the law in an effort to slow the flood of thousands of illegal immigrants and reduce the amount of crimes in the area, disagree; arguing that the drug trafficking and other crimes are more of a drain and the constitution applies to citizens, not immigrants. President Barack Obama argues that immigration is the federal governments responsibility, not that of each individual state.

The lawsuit is quite a gamble since a reported 59 percent of people polled agree with Arizona’s law. The suit was filed by The Justice Department in federal court with a request for an injunction to keep the law from going into effect on July 29. An official with the Justice Department said that should the injunction be refused, the federal government would be closely monitoring Arizona’s enforcement of the law for illegal racial profiling and other civil rights violations.

Arizona’s governor, Jan Brewer, argues that the lawsuit is a waste of taxpayers money and that the law was needed because the federal government failed to do its job. She has sworn to fight the lawsuit, and has set up a legal defense fund to cover the fees without having to dip into taxpayer money.

Angering citizens of Arizona even further, Mexico’s Foreign Ministry has expressed “satisfaction” with the Obama administrations challenge of the state law. The ministry released a statement of following the process closely, and being firmly committed to protecting the rights of Mexicans everywhere.

So, apparently, individual states should not try to protect their citizens when the federal government fails to do so. And, obviously, America should show more concern for the rights of “visitors” than for those of its own citizens. Right? WRONG! Bad move, Obama admin, bad move.
