It is now confirmed that there is another oil spill in the gulf of Mexico. According to a federal document, a drilling rig near the Deepwater Horizon has been leaking since at least April 30th. This leak is smaller than the first. The 10-mile long Saratoga spill is visible in some space pictures gathered by skytruth.org. This site monitors environmental problems using satellites. Federal officials did not respond right away to questions asked about the size of the leak, how long it has been leaking, or if they are going to be able to plug it. Skytruth made it’s first report of the leak on May 15th.
In the May 1st trajectory map for the Deepwater Horizon, officials said that the oil from the Ocean Saratoga spill might be also washing up on the Louisiana shore. The only other thing mentioned about the spill was at the May 17th U.S. Coast Guard media conference. Admiral Mary Landry said that she was unaware that the was another drilling rig leaking into the Gulf. Officials at the National Response Center said that the spill had been reported, but would not say when it began. The U.S. Coast Guard did not immediately respond to the e-mails seeking comment.
St the time this information became widely known, we also learn of yet another spill. A U.S. Coast Guard towing vessel collided Tuesday, July 27, 2010 with an oil and gas platform off the Louisiana coast, causing a minor oil spill in an area already dealing with the BP disaster. This collision in Barataria Bay left a “Light sheen” of oil and some gas vapors spilling out of the platform. It has not been said how much oil was flowing out of the platform. Approximately 1.8 km of containment boom have been placed around the platform. Due to clean up already taking place due to the BP spill, this spill received a quick response.
