Bp releases toxins in Texas town

A toxin spill at a Texas City, Texas BP plant may be responsible for people of the town developing respiratory problems. The spill went largely unnoticed until parents started finding their children were coming down with respiratory problems. Over 538,000 pounds of toxins were pouring out of the BP plant over the period of 40 days.
State environmental agents said the plant attempted to burn the toxins into the smokestacks, but thousands of pounds still escaped into the environment. The residents of the area near the BP plant were not notified of the spill until two weeks after it had ended. A $10 billion class action suit has been filed against BP by the residents, and State attorney Greg Abbott is also suing for fines of $600,000.
BP states that three different air monitors around the plant, and two in the community did not show a rise in pollution during the months of April and May. Due to the lack of increase in air pollutants according to their monitors, BP does not feel that there is any basis to pay the claims. A State environmentalist said that there were too few monitors to accurately access what had happened with the pollution.
Residents are more concerned over BPs silence than the spill itself. They worry about health problems arising and it being too late to do anything about it due to not being told until the last minute. TTS will continue to follow this story. Updates will be provided as they become available.
