- Glenn Beck rally at Lincoln Memorial, a blogger states that certain parts of Washington D.C. Should be avoided and started off accusations of racism, prompting a stern response from angry city leaders.
- Unknown tea party blogger, Bruce Majors, stirred emotions up past the boiling point with his blog that first appeared last Monday, warning conservative protestors to avoid certain subway lines, that certain neighborhoods should be avoided, and that the city is populated by the worlds refugees. He stated that taxi drivers are often Arab or African, and visitors should remain wary.
- Majors blog inspired a satirical map of the capitol with all of the city marked unsafe except for a small area that’s home to the Lincoln Memorial. City leaders were not amused.
- Majors said that he offered his blog as a “visitors guide” to the people planning to attend Beck’s rally, and that he never expected it to draw so much attention.
- The blog post listed home addresses of Democratic political leaders with the not “Feel free to protest!” Majors has said that the post was not intended as racist.
- Vincent Gray, a member of city council and a candidate for mayor, urged tea party activists to ride the subway and visit the city’s neighborhoods, stating,”Frankly, we need to put an end to that venom.”
- Beck rally organizers refused to comment on the blog post.
- Beck called Saturday’s rally a “Restoring Honor” rally, to show support of the country’s military; held at the site where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech exactly 47 years ago.
- Near the end of the event, Beck announced that it had raised over $5 million dollars for the Special Operations Warriors Foundation.
- The location of the rally along with the timing prompted civil rights leaders to cry foul.
- “They have a right to rally. But what they don’t have the right to do is distort what Dr. King’s dream was about,” Rev. Al Sharpton.
- Sharpton organized a counter rally also near the site of King’s speech after calling Beck’s tea party assembly an anti-government action.
- Sharpton claimed that the Beck rally goes against the message in King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, which vied for equality.
- Sharpton told C-SPAN that Beck’s rally called for the “structural breakdown” of the U.S. Government and did not serve the country’s interests while contradicting the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.
- On an interesting note, Dr. King’s niece attended Beck’s rally, not Rev. Sharptons “Reclaim the Dream” rally.
- There is more controversy surrounding these two events, Let us just sit back and see what comes of it all.
