Survival Series becomes a pile of mis-information

Published on September 29, 2010 by   ·   No Comments

Okay I initially posted on The discovery Channel’s series The Colony before the start of the second season, now that it is over….here is my critique of it. First off, I was very disappointed  with the middle 2 episodes and the season finale. It started out with some good information that people not survival savvy would find useful if caught in a similar situation. Unfortunately it went to Hell shortly after. Comparing the first season with second was something like comparing dogs and cats, though they have some of the same parts the overall character just isn’t the same. The first season had people that were on top of the situation from the jump, the second season had a cast of characters that really never seemed to jive enough to “Get It”.

Security in this season was never up to par, even after “Tick” came on the scene it still was lack luster, possibly just a little too late. Stupid decisions concerning interactions with “Outsiders” just added to the pile of crap that this series developed in to. The introduction of two new characters midway through showed promise at first and then fizzled out also, I was glad to see them take them two characters back out of the experiment.

I can sit here all night and type the woulda , shoulda, coulda’s, but why? We all seen the evidence and it stands as a testimony to itself. So, let us just skip to the final episode.

The finale started with plans to raid the outsider’s camp….WHY?….You got a boat to get you out of the hell you had been living in for 50 days and take you to the ” Promised Land” . Why even bother when the scouts had come back and reported that the house they found and the land surrounding it flourished with abundance. So they do the raid and shortly after VOPA appears and tells them they can take two with them, and one colonist quickly jumps ship….Again….WHY? You made it this far, why leave? Stupid. Anyways there was two aspects of this finale that made my stomach turn…..well three actually.

  • When the Colonists are cruising down the bayou and the voice overs of their thoughts on the experience are playing in that Oh So Dramatic Way! They get to the house and out of nowhere appears a group of strangers and they just cruise on by into the sunset….WTF? So what happened? Talk about a idiotic ending!
  • When they are individually filming the participants and they are discussing what they learned, etc…Jim the Christian turned Psycho, says something to the effect that there is no sense in preparing for any type of survival situation, that you should just spend time with your family. Are you kidding me? What a completely ignorant statement….How about this? Prepare your family along with yourself, that way no matter what situation arises you ALL have a better than average chance of surviving.
  • The last thing is this, one of the “experts” that appeared periodically throughout the season said That in a situation like the scenario portrayed, that there is little chance that anyone would survive (paraphrased) . So in other words just curl up with your loved ones and die. This series and it’s ending messages could easily be taken  to be saying, Don’t bother fighting for your freedoms or your life because in the end, Resistance is futile. It may as well been said by Big Brother himself.

I’m disappointed and disgusted. I truly feel that in the end this series is just another means by which we are being systematically programmed to comply. Please share your thoughts and feelings. All feedback is Welcome!
