Increased number of Suicides in the LGBT Community

Published on September 30, 2010 by   ·   No Comments

Suicides among members of the gay community are on the rise. Studies show that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths are almost four times more likely to attempt suicide before their heterosexual peers. It has also been estimated that LGBT adolescents that were rejected by their family and friends are 8.4 times more likely to attempt suicide, and for every completed suicide up to 200 more are attempted. In the past two weeks it has not been surprising to get online and read the news of another LGBT suicide, with the most recent being that of a Rutgers University student. The RU freshman is believed to have committed suicide after a video was circulated of a sexual encounter between himself and another male. Two other students have been charged with invasion of privacy, both could face up to five years in prison. Only a few short days before this, an eighth-grader in Houston, Texas shot himself in the head after constant harassment from other students at Hamilton Middle School. The 8th grade students’ parents have stated their son was continuously physically and verbally abused by other students, and that the school district ignored their complaints. The school district, however, is denying that they ever heard from the parents. Members of several different LGBT communities are organizing protests demanding LGBT friendly spaces on campuses. It is becoming painfully obvious that something needs to be done. Proper education about LGBT needs to be implemented. Awareness of how deadly ignorance truly is needs to be raised amongst the students of our country. Our government, our president, need to step up to the plate and do their part to help end such senseless tragedies! This has gone on for too long! Open your eyes to the truth, LGBT individuals are people too!!!
