A Warning to Sailors: Ghost Ships

Fisherman and Sailors have always spoken of mysterious ships that would appear on the horizon only to disappear as quickly as they showed up. These Phantoms are considered a warning of approaching Bad Luck. The term Ghost Ship also is a reference used to describe ships that are found without any trace of the crew. These instances themselves harbor a mysterious air about them.

The Dutch vessel, Ourang Medan became a famous Ghost Ship in 1947 off the coast  of Malaysia. Two American vessels received a distress call from the Ourang saying that the Captain and crew were either dead or dying. The last words they received from the Ourang crew member was “I Die”. When they finally got to the ship they found the entire crew, even the dogs DEAD. No damage was found on the Ourang, the crew’s faces and bodies were locked in poses and expressions that emanated Terror. Before the other two crews could make it deeper onto the ship, it strangely burst into flames and they had to leave it.

The Baychimo was a cargo steam ship that was abandoned near Alaska and drifted the seas for close to forty years. The Hudson Bay Company ship was used to trade fur with the Canadian Inuit people. In 1931 the ship got stuck in pack ice, several attempts were made to free it to no avail, the crew had to be airlifted to safety. After a severe blizzard the Baychimo broke free from the ice and was left abandoned by the company, presuming it would not last the winter. The ship lasted and stayed adrift for the next 38 years and was last seen in 1969, it was once again stuck in pack ice. The ship has not been seen since and is thought to have finally sank to it’s watery resting place.
